Save the Styx turns Blue!
Recently I visited Christmas Island, a speck of volcanic rock way off the
northwest coast of Australia in the Indian Ocean, a home to an extraordinary
number of crab species and other unique animals. This volcanic rock rises to a
central plateau covered with tall rainforest and then drops straight down to a
depth of 5000 metres under the sea. Following the path down to the turtle
breeding ground eGreta Beachf I pass tall trees and huge climbers that seemed to
be growing on black rock. The forest floor has a strangely tidy appearance as
crabs eat all the leaf litter. But stepping through the final rim of pandanus palms
onto the beach utterly changes this impression. The beach is thickly covered in
man made plastic rubbish: thongs, toothbrushes, ropes, spoons, containers,
bottlesc.here, far away from people, our discarded plastics have washed onto
the beach forming barricades so dense that the turtle hatchlings cannot reach the
sea.

This is appalling. See the video clip on our website that illustrates this
(www.savethestyx.org.au).

We must act! The Save the Styx group has decided to join the effort to clean up
the sea. Locally on our northern beaches, we are spreading the message by
showing the documentary Bag it, and advocating for a ban on single use plastic
products especially the plastic shopping bag. To help the turtles on Christmas
Island and to highlight the extent of our problem we will take a small group of
school children to the island to help their peers, who have been cleaning the
beaches for 10 years. We will use our visit to create art work and film for a media
campaign about plastic pollution in the oceans.

Our group was established to help save the magnificent old growth forests in the
Styx River valley in Tasmania, but has since raised money to fund campaigns for
Recherche Bay, Wielangta Forest, River Red Gums in southern NSW and most
recently the upper Florentine Valley and the grey nurse shark. We have raised
over $130,000 that has contributed to the success of many of our campaigns.
Our overheads are minimal and all labour is donated.

We invite you to come along from 6.00pm on Saturday 18th February 2012 at
Forestville Memorial Hall in Starkey St, Forestville.

Yours,
Conny Harris
