Following is an email just written to Minister Bowen regarding the keeping of Children (refugees) in detention centers. Really this is about all people in detention centers – the Ideal Scene is that places are created for swiftly assisting people and having appropriate compassionate outcomes specific to each case decided within weeks – not years. This email is just about Children but others cover all Peoples. If you feel like it there is more information on a number of web sites. We need a permanent approach to ensure the best interests of the child are paramount in our immigration system.
I urge you to establish an indiependant commissioner to conduct a three month review on how we can safeguard the rights of children in our immigration system.
After the recent publicity my Children 6 and 8 asked for more information – they could not believe or understand why anyone – but Children especially would be in detention – they asked me how many of the Children could come and stay with us – all of them?
The thing is yes some could – yes there is trauma, shock, antisocial behaviours PTS etc. With love and training and therapy this could be assisted.
Other families could be trained in this as well. Plus families should be kept together – if there are whole families in detention then let them live in community as a family while the ‘paper-work’ has to continue. What is really needed is not just an overhaul of the system for Children but for all asylum seekers. Start now with Children – lets get something positive happening.
I know families who would openly foster Children – cut the red tape. Check us out (us parents do the police checks etc) then run traiing courses have support network set up then bring us the Children. Many are willing.
“As Jesus Said Let the Children Come to Me”
What’s your fear that we’ll start getting boat loads of Children because their parents are giving up their most precious thing in teh hope of a bettter life for them.
So what ? If Australia ‘the Lucky Country’ can’t handle that it’s time we made some serious changes. Most of us have only recently ‘arrived here’ or are decendants of those who have a lineage here of less than 200 years.
All I’ve spoken with are of a like mind to mine.
Looking forward to seeing the compassionate outcomes so I can be proud to tell my Children how we ‘Australians’ aid and support others.
All the Best
